Dalmatia – from wine and olive oils to local delicacies, prosciutto and cheese, songs, traditions and heritage – will be presented in all of its glory on May 25 and 26 at the great spring feast in Diocletian’s cellar.
Every year just before the busy Split summer season hits, Dalmatian newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija honors the people of Split and their guests with ‘Vinski Podrum’ (Wine Cellar), a vibrant wine festival in the famous cellars of Roman emperor Diocletian. And just as if Diocletian was still living, these imperial basements are dressed for the best during this two-day event, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on May 13, 2018.
The best wines of Dalmatia and all of Croatia will be displayed in Diocletian’s basement, paired with Croatian delicacies, music, workshops and promotions all organized as part of the wine-inspired festivities.
Slobodna Dalmacija has already summoned more than 80 of Croatia’s most beloved winemakers to Split for the festival, and more than 500 wines will be offered with tasty treats.
Visitors will be able to attend tasting sessions, intriguing workshops and lectures during the two-day events, and if you’d like, you can also apply for tasting tours with a personal sommelier.
All participants will see the best of the best at Vinski Podrum, from the world-famous and mighty plavac from Pelješac and Hvar to the fragrances of the Danube and the rugged Vrgorac vineyards, to the beautiful Golden Valley, Baranja and Srijem, the great master Boris Drenški Bodren from Zagorje and the proud fame of the Imotski vineyards. The best wine-makers from Krk willbring their beautiful summer Žlahtina, and the story of the great wines of Benkovac, which has won the most prestigious awards in the world, will be justified by their wineries.
In addition to the tastings, prosciutto and cheeses, delicacies from the sea and handmade exclusive chocolates, visitors will also be able to take part in special workshops and lectures. Each year, the Vinski Podrum workshops bring new, unique stories and the latest knowledge of the world of wine. This year’s workshops will discuss the potential of Kaštela grapes, the value and future of the Vugava, the new white wines from the sea, Dalmatian summer red wines, the secret of the Benkovac vineyards and a new variety born at the Dubrovnik airport.
Visitors will also be able to taste the best Dalmatian olive oils and precisely those who won gold and silver medals in New York, Milan and Japan at the most famous world competitions, placing Dalmatia in the sphere of the elite. Vinski Podrum will also feature some of Split’s best restaurants, including Konoba “Korta”, “La Grotta”, “Zrno Soli“ and “Zora Bila”, who will prepare special menus as part of the event.
We’re less than two weeks away from the big party, and tickets and more information announced soon! You can read our story from 2017 here.
