The Šenoa House will be hosting a number of events November 14 – December 13.
Do you know that 182 streets in Croatia bear the name of the great author?
Rightfully so – he was one of the most popular Croatian authors of all time and his works are one of the most interesting ways for you to explore Croatian history – Goldsmith’s Gold, Pirates of Senj and Peasants’ Revolt are his most popular novels, which, together with his other numerous other works, earned him the title of the Father of Croatian Novel, as well as the creator of modern national literature.
He incorporated elements from the national history into his novels and combined them with modern events at the time, depicting important events that transformed the Croatian history, but on an individual level. He wanted to show how these big events affected the lives of regular, common people. He criticised the society and how it treated its marginalised members and he combined national romanticism with realistic portrayals of the petite bourgeois class.
Šenoa is still very much present in Zagreb – you can see him leaning against a post at Vlaška Street and his Dora Krupićeva is located right above the Stone Gate.
A month of events celebrating the great author will start on his birthday, November 14, and end on the anniversary of his death, on December 13.
