A Successful Summer Clean-up Operation in the Zukova Bay

Total Croatia News

A very nice local and international initiative on the Kabal Peninsula north of Stari Grad in this morning’s inbox:

VROTA KOBLU – THE GATE TO KABAL is the name of a brand new association of local people of Rudine as well as European holidaymakers from Norway, Germany, France etc coming to Rudine every year.

Out of enthusiasm towards this unique environment and the natural beauty of HVAR’s Žukova bay, the group has made its first attempt to show its resolve to preserve Žukova.

On 21 August, very early in the morning, 33 people aged from 7 to 70 went down to Žukova, unusually equipped with huge plastic bags, gloves and cutting devices. The purpose was to collect rubbish left behind by careless visitors to the bay and that washed up by the sea.

The rubbish was put into black bin bags, as required by the municipality of Stari Grad. These were collected at three spots. Fishermen’s boats transported them to another spot at the bay from where group members carried them on their backs 150 meters uphill where the refuse truck was waiting.

In three hours the efforts of 33 people resulted in more than 100 bags filled with rubbish, a fridge, three car tires and three rubber dinghies.

Positive comments have already been received about the cleaned-up area. The group considers the first reaction of tourists and local people as an encouragement to continue the work for nature. In fact the preservation of its natural beauty is in the interest of all people enjoying this exquisite area.

The group VROTA KOBLU – THE GATE TO KABAL will continue to inform the public about its future activities and appreciates the support of everyone who loves Rudine, Žukova and the peninsula of Kabal, which is a nature reserve.
