A Croatian tribute to a Game of Thrones icon.
Just a week ago the world was shocked by the brave passing of a gentle giant Hodor. The legend lives but the character, just like many more in the show Game of Thrones has died. Hodor’s scenes were mostly filmed in Iceland and in Ireland, but much more of the show has been filmed in Croatia. Hodor is a gentle giant, a servant that could only speak 1 word – Hodor. His real name was Willis and we learnt much of his backstory past week. He died bravely, as a humble man, a man that helped other his whole life.
Some heroes don’t wear capes.
“In a time when social values in Croatia are low, let us remember a humble man, a man who dedicated his life to care for others. He died as he lived; silently and peacefully but with attitude and belief in righteousness” wrote Zoran Žmirić from Rijeka and added: “A place of piety is on the Jadranski square in Rijeka. If you happen to pass by, stop and pay your respect to the man whose life can only inspire us all.”
The family Zmirić wholeheartedly accepted the initiative by their young member Hanna and created a small tribute and a shrine to recently deceased giant Hodor. It is unknown if this great man ever visited Croatia, as a part of filming game of thrones, yet his passing touched us all.
The story was first featured in the Croatian media on May 28, 2016.
