Advent in Split Begins Today: Here’s What You Can Expect this Year

Daniela Rogulj

The city of Split will welcome the first weekend of December in their best holiday dress – and it is an outfit they won’t have to change until the 16th of January, 2018.

Advent in Split begins this evening and plans to make faces jolly through January 16, 2018, thanks to the European Handball Championship in Split then. It’s time to eat, drink, and be merry!

While this year’s Advent in Split will look a bit different than those in the past (there are only 14 Christmas cottages on the Riva, after all), the holiday spirit will certainly still seep through all parts of the town with festive locations new and old – and the Split Tourist Board is confident that this year’s event will not disappoint.

“The Christmas atmosphere is not created by houses on the Riva, but by people and their mood,” said Alijana Vukušić, director of the Split Tourist Board for Slobodna Dalmacija on December 1, 2017.

The burning of the Advent candle in front of Sv. Frane church officially begins the program of the Advent in Split, which this year is organized by the City of Split, the Split Tourist Board and the city company Spalatum DMC. The representatives from the projects including Christmas Fair on the Riva, Advent at Pjaca, Advent at Dardin, Advent at Ul. King kralja Tomislava, Lighting 4 Advent Candles, Gastroadvent, Gastro Get Advent, Advent at the Tourist Palace, the program of the Croatian National Theater, the program of the City Puppet Theater, Unique Christmas with KUD Jedinstvom, the International Festival CRO PATRIA, Nativity Scene at the Chapel of Arnira, the humanitarian project “Sv. Luce Brings a Smile” are also all a part of this year’s event.

“This year’s program is vibrant, and today we present everything that will take place during Advent in Split. Life will be moved to the streets of the city on Saturday. We will light the candle at the fountain in front of Sv. Frane and officially begin Advent in Split,” said the Split Deputy Mayor.

This year, children will be able to experience their Advent at Dardin, “GalaAdvent” will take place in front of the Gallery at Ul. Krajla Tomislava, and KUD Jedinstvo will revive the old Split practice of choir around the city every Saturday at 11:00.

“Whoever chooses Split as a destination for Advent this year will certainly not be making a mistake. This year we have a rich and complete program. We have proven that we have real destination management. All local subjects and caterers, hoteliers and cultural institutions have joined the City and Tourist Board. We have an extremely rich program with over 40 participants. We hope this will be a more successful Advent compared to last year because new locations have opened, new programs have been created, and we have devoted great attention to our children. There is something for everyone,” concluded Vukšić.

Here’s a look at this year’s program.
