ADVENTurous Women of Zagreb: A New Way to Explore the Capital

Daniela Rogulj

The Zagreb Tourist Board decided to refresh their internationally-awarded mobile application, Zagreb Be There, for this year’s Advent festivities.

Zagreb Be There has added a new route called ADVENTurous Women of Zagreb where visitors in the capital city can visit various locations to learn more about the famous women of Zagreb, which is the heart of this year’s Advent theme – the tales and fairy tales of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. Visitors can also get acquainted with seven other inspirational women – Marija Jurić Zagorka, the Baković sisters, the first woman to wear trousers, Slava Šenoa, Sidonija Rubido Erdődy, Cata Dujšin-Ribar, and Ljerka Šram, reports HRTurizam on December 9, 2018.

The Zagreb Be There application is like a local insider every visitor can carry in their pocket, using their smartphone to uncover the lesser-known tourist attractions in the city. In the summer and during Advent, along with the application’s regular routes, Zagreb Be There also includes temporary routes. Although it is intended primarily for tourists, the application is even used by locals.

This Advent, visitors will learn the story of famous writer Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, who is featured on the ADVENTurous Women of Zagreb route that takes visitors to Maksimir, one of the new Advent locations with numerous fairytale programs for children and adults.

Tkalčićeva Street, or “Advent of Old Tkalča”, is the second new Advent location on the application which features Marija Jurić Zagorka, the first Croatian female journalist. Zagreb’s anti-fascism fighters the Baković sisters are highlighted through the passage bearing their name, where visitors will also find a Christmas movie set where they can catch Christmas films as part of the Kino Europa program. The first woman to wear trousers in Zagreb will take visitors to Zrinjevac.

If visitors travel along the entire ADVENTurous Women of Zagreb route, they will also visit Masarykova street where Slava Šenoa was born, followed by the Croatian Music Institute which is linked to the first Croatian opera prima donna Sidonija Rubido Erdődy, Demetrova 3 which boasts the memorial collection of painter Cate Dujšin-Ribar, and finally, Dežman’s passage which is connected to celebrity actress Ljerka Šram and her very real romance with Milivoj Dežman.

In addition to the ADVENTurous Women of Zagreb route, visitors can also enjoy the traditional Advent Zagreb route, where the key locations of Advent events are marked, and other well-known routes such as Hidden Spots, Classic Zagreb, Street Art, New Zagreb, Craft Zagreb, and Great Croats.

The application is free and available on both Android and iPhone devices, and can also be downloaded at betherezagreb.com

The application was developed by the Bruketa & Žinić & Gray agency in cooperation with the Zagreb Tourist Board and won an international award at the Tourism & Strategy Festival in Paris in 2015 for the best digital tourism promotion in Europe.
