August 20, 2018 – Split still impresses us as a town full of talented locals, from successful athletes to artists. I do not think there is a city in the world that can boast such a pool of talents, like Split. This time we will introduce you to a famous artist from the beautiful town of Split, Neno Mikulić, who is very famous in the art world as a master of unique sculptures and paintings. Academic painter Neno Mikulić devoted his work to creating sculptures and paintings in which he insists on figuration, developing recognizable bold characters with accentuated love motifs, animal world and scenes inspired by life in Dalmatia. His works are in collecting funds from the Modern Gallery in Zagreb and the St. Krševan in Šibenik to the private collections around the world
Neno Mikulić has had many successful sculpture and painting exhibitions, but this exhibition called „Galeb i ja”, is unique and special, especially for the locals, as Neno devoted this exhibition to the deceased Dalmatian and Croatian music legend Oliver Dragojević.
So, let’s have a look at this amazing works of art made and painted by Neno Mikulić.
The piece of art by Neno Mikulić I love the most is this amazing sculpture called “Galeb na panju” or in English “Seagull on the stump”. The stunning sculpture, made of wood covered with sea colors, is certainly the core of the exhibition.
The seagull sculpture is so fascinating as it looks like the animal is lost in the breathtaking view of the deep blue sea, feeling nostalgic and fatal. The seagull seems to be missing something special.
A very similar sculpture can be found in the popular and traditional summer bar covered with straw near the most popular pebble beach in Split, Bačvice.
This painting was named after one of the famous songs of Oliver Dragojević – a famous Dalmatian music legend to whom the exhibition is dedicated. The name of the song and painting is “Trag u beskraju” or in English “Trace in the infinity”, probably one of the most romantic and recognizable songs by Oliver Dragojević.
Just one glimpse of this incredible painting is enough to create the most romantic story ever. A couple of loving hugs and look at each other somewhere in the middle of the ocean as the ship knocks. With ease we can imagine the most romantic and most fatal scene from the Titanic, watching this piece painted by Neno Mikulić.
Another romantic scene is a couple in love with her red lips highlighted.
Neno Mikulić is very famous for showing two main features: land and sea. Neno claims that when he creates two land motifs, he must immediately create two pieces of a sea motif. While making pieces for this exhibition, he did the same thing: he included two main motifs of land and sea together with the motif of Oliver Dragojević’s musical opus.
Characters that he represents are mostly fatigued, ladies are chubby, and here and there are some in normal a size. This is a very attractive and grateful topic. That form gives them a sense of humor, the lines are very pleasant to the eye and the eye rests on those lines. And while everyone is looking for the ideal of beauty and wanting to lose weight, in sculptures and paintings, this redness is appealing, and classical beauties are boring.
Mikulić claims that he finds inspiration in life and things that surround him such as ordinary people, scenes from everyday life and animals.
Mikulić’s art is amazing, very special and takes your breath away. His sculptures and paintings do not have perfect lines or smooth surfaces, and are still very charming and give us a smile. That’s what makes his work so special.
His “Galeb i ja” exhibition is the perfect combination of visual and audiovisual art combining sea and Dalmatian motifs with the recognizable musical opus of renowned musician Oliver Dragojević. If you are familiar with Oliver’s musical opus, at first glance at the paintings and sculptures, you can hear the lyrics of his famous songs. If you are not, then just imagine that your favorite and most romantic song is playing while watching the amazing works of Neno Mikulić.
Art is an expression of emotions and creativity, and Neno Mikulić’s art leaves you enough space to develop your own creativity and emotions by interpreting his work of art in your own unique way.
