Spring, who?

Today feels anything but the start of spring and everything that would entail you being bundled up inside by the fire on a cold winter’s day. The spring season has just begun, but this winter weather is not leaving us just yet.

On March 21, 2018, the people of Split woke up to weather of blistering bura winds, snow flurries whirled and twirled in many parts of Dalmatia, and the island of Brač welcomed snow.

The rain that fell overnight in parts of Brač quickly turned into snow, especially in areas 400 meters above sea level. Around 10 inches of snow fell in Vidova Gora, and this morning you could find it through the interior of the island.

This new round of winter weather was brought by a Mediterranean cyclone that resulted in a batch of fresh, cold continental air. This morning, temperatures in the minus were recorded in the mountains, but also in Inland Dalmatia. On the coast, the coldest area was recorded in Šibenik where temperatures were around zero this morning. Snow also fell in Šibenik’s surroundings, including Vodice and Primošten.

The temperature in Split this morning was a crisp 3 degrees Celsius, and a thin snow layer covered Klis and even the upper parts of Solin, in Gornje Sitno and Dubrava. Mosor saw the temperature drop to -2 degrees, and snowflakes were seen in Kaštela, too.

The strong bura wind blew up to 94 km / h in Split, and 65 km / h in Šibenik and Zadar. The strongest bura impact in Dalmatia was measured at the Pag Bridge, where winds ripped up to 157 km / h. The village of Prizna saw 178 km / h this morning!

Precipitation will occasionally continue during the day, while snow flurries may continue to wander about – but no significant quantities of snow are expected. The winter weather problems look like they will hit again on Thursday, where 100 km / h winds are expected in the Split area as well.

Happy spring?
