August the 7th, 2026 – The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) has had to rescue yet another foreign national stuck on Biokovo.
As Index reports, the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) has reported a night-time rescue of a foreign national who got lost last night in the area of Sutvid above Živogošće near Makarska, at around 1,050 metres above sea level on the southeastern part of Biokovo. HGSS received the call on Wednesday at around 18:30.
The man reported that due to high temperatures and lack of water he had become severely dehydrated, felt extreme weakness and was no longer able to safely continue moving or find the way. Four rescuers from the HGSS Makarska Station immediately set out into the field, and due to the demanding terrain they were soon joined by another four.
“After several hours of night ascent, the rescuers reached the injured person at 22:50. First aid was provided at the scene and after a rest and rehydration, accompanied by the rescuers, he began the descent towards the vehicle,” the HGSS Makarska Station announced.
The operation was successfully completed at 02:50. Photos published by HGSS show that the man had set out on the ascent in sandals. HGSS once again warns everyone not to go into the mountains without appropriate equipment and a sufficient amount of fluids.
“We’d once again like to appeal to all visitors to Biokovo to please, please carefully plan their trip before going into the mountains. During the summer months it is absolutely paramount that you bring a sufficient amount of water, avoid the hottest part of the day and use appropriate hiking footwear,” HGSS said.
