Pop icon Severina is on tour in the States – a guest post from Paul Bradley from Arizona who caught the show in Vegas on April 30, 2017.
There simply aren’t enough superlatives in the English language to adequately describe the performance I saw last night. Even now, I am buzzing from the experience. Severina once again showed that she is the Queen of the Balkans, the Croatian Madonna. Her 2 1/2 hour set was a perfect blend of soulful ballads, catchy pop and infectious dance, laced with that heady combination of Mediterranean flair and Balkan beats that characterizes Dalmatian music. Seve is the consummate performer – energetic, charismatic and engaging with her audience. It is obvious that she thoroughly enjoys what she does.
Having just turned 45, her career now spans over 30 years, so she has a vast catalogue of favourites to call upon to please her fans, from the old standards, Dalmatinka, Virujem U Te and Mili Moi to the recent hits, Hurem, Kao and Otrove – each song sung with gusto by those of us in the audience. It was a pleasure to note that the audience ranged from teens to seniors, all enjoying the show together.
I suspect I was probably the only one amongst the 1,500-odd people there who doesn’t speak Croatian, but I’ve always said that good music transcends language, and this is assuredly good music.
I never imagined that I’d ever be able to see Severina perform live, so to have her play just a few hours away was an opportunity I really couldn’t pass up and I am so glad that I went.
