Antun Plančić and his brothers belongs among the first Croatian private winemakers. The Plančić family received awards for their wines back in old Yugoslavia. However, a series of doubtful business decisions brought the old Plančić winery into agony, which lasted for years. Now the Hvar Plančić’s are trying to make a comeback with a completely new concept.
Instead of being a large producer, as they meant to be a dozen years ago, The Plančić family decide to become a family winery with a maximum production of 70 to 80 thousand bottles annually. Grapes are grown on their seven hectares of vineyards and by subcontractors. The bottles are split into an entire line of labels, from basic ones mostly based on bought grapes, to various reserves and grand crus, soon to be renamed into Croatian terminology.
Recently we tasted Plančić wines with new labels, with a convincingly best impression from the Ager 2016. Ager is a coupage based on Bogdanuša, with several other local varieties. In some ancient harvests Ager used to be heavily oxidised and slightly dull. The new Ager, however, is a fresh, modern, precisely made wine with fruit and herbal aromas, with lots of energy and a some welcome, almost spicy sharpness on the nose. For the 80 kunas it is valued on shelves, Ager represents a very solid value for money. For the Plančić family it is extremely important for the new Ager to serve as a good argument for their return to the Croatian wine scene.
