The government makes an important decision for the development of Croatia’s IT sector.

The executive director of the “Digital Croatia” association Đuro Lubura expressed his support for this week’s decision by the government to establish the Council on State Information Infrastructure. It is seen as an essential step forward in creating a suitable environment for the development of new technologies in Croatia, reports Poslovni.hr on January 13, 2018.

The newly-established Council will monitor and coordinate the development of the state information infrastructure. Among other things, it will make recommendations to the government on the adoption of strategic, planning, implementation and other decisions in the field of state information infrastructure and digital society.

Speaking about this vital step, Lubura said that his association supported all the moves by the government that will contribute to the faster development of electronic communications infrastructure. “The construction of the communications infrastructure that will be available to all operators on equal terms is a prerequisite for the development of competitiveness and market competition, which always leads to higher investments, better services and lower prices for customers,” Lubura said.

Lubura also spoke about the most important task which will be dealt with this year by the newly-established Council, which is the implementation of the National programme for the development of broadband infrastructure in areas where there is insufficient commercial interest for investments, which is a prerequisite for the development of new generation access networks in rural communities.

“We hope that the establishment of the Council will help the state make the necessary decisions as soon as possible and launch the project of building fibre-optic communication infrastructure in rural settlements for which the European Union has granted us hundreds of millions of kuna in grants. It is necessary to speed up the activities so that the approved European grants are not wasted, which would have the consequence of citizens and the economy not being able to use modern services in fixed communications,” said Lubura.

The Digital Croatia association was founded to promote new technologies and business models created by their use. Its founders are DOK-ING, M+ Group, Tele2 and Uber, and they have been joined by Bellabeat, Hangar18 and STEMI. The key areas of the association’s activities are the promotion of new technologies and business models, and the promotion of infrastructure development – primarily the infrastructure for e-mobility and the telecommunications infrastructure. Also, the association seeks to promote market competition as a critical development factor. It encourages the improvement of the investment and entrepreneurial climate, and the adaptation of the education system to the needs of the business sector and the demands of the future.
