ZAGREB, June 29, 2018 – The Croatian taxpayer with average income works half a year for the state and another half for themselves and their family, the Lipa taxpayers association said on Friday in a statement marking the Tax Freedom Day, which this year falls on July 1.
The calculation was made for a hypothetical citizen who earns an average income, is married, has one child, lives in Zagreb, owns a car, does not smoke and pays TV subscription.
“Tax Freedom Day is the day in the year when you stop working for the state and its institutions. On July 1, you start working for yourself and your family!” the association said.
It added that, although the tax reform of 2017 was a step in the right direction, Croatia was still awaiting real tax relief that would also be felt by citizens with average wages.
Reducing the expenditure side of the budget and a thorough reform of the public sector (the health and pension system, judiciary, administration and local government) are the only way for the taxpayers to start celebrating the Tax Freedom Day earlier than in the previous years, the association said.
