July the 10th, 2026 – Croatia is outperforming its old Mediterranean rivals in terms of overnight stays despite a somewhat slower start to the main season in June.

Poslovni reports that Croatia has recorded the strongest growth in tourist overnight stays among Europe’s leading Mediterranean destinations this year, outperforming fierce competitors including Greece, Italy and Portugal despite signs of a slightly more challenging summer season.

According to data presented by the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ), Croatia achieved a 4% increase in overnight stays during the first six months of 2026 compared with the same period last year. The figures place the country ahead of several of its main tourism rivals. The somewhat rocky start to the season in June appears to have had no effect on the actual figures.

Better performance than Greece, Italy and Portugal

While Croatia recorded 4% growth, Greece posted a 3% increase in overnight stays, Italy 2%, and Portugal 1%. The figures suggest Croatia has continued to attract strong visitor demand despite growing concerns over rising prices and increased competition from other Mediterranean destinations. Tourism officials say the results demonstrate that Croatia remains one of Europe’s most sought-after holiday destinations, although they acknowledge that visitors are becoming increasingly price-conscious.

Strong first half offsets a slightly weaker June

The positive six-month performance comes despite a decline in tourist arrivals and overnight stays during June, traditionally one of Croatia’s busiest months. Officials attribute part of the slowdown to calendar effects, changes to school holiday schedules in key source markets such as Germany, and stronger competition from neighbouring countries. Nevertheless, they believe the strong start to the year has provided a solid foundation ahead of the peak July and August holiday period.

Competitiveness remains the key challenge

Despite leading its Mediterranean competitors in overnight stay growth, Croatia’s tourism sector continues to face mounting pressure over pricing and value for money.

Government officials have repeatedly called on hotels, restaurants and retailers to moderate prices, warning that travellers are becoming more selective and increasingly comparing Croatia with alternative destinations around the Mediterranean. With the busiest weeks of the tourist season now underway and with many more yet to come, industry leaders say maintaining competitiveness will be essential if Croatia is to match or surpass last year’s record tourism performance.
