July the 10th, 2026 – Split Port is set to construct a bitumen storage terminal as part of a large investment totalling 8 million euros.

Poslovni reports that Split Port is planning to invest 8 million euros in the construction of a new land-based bitumen storage terminal, a project aimed at improving the supply of one of the key materials used in road construction and infrastructure projects across Croatia.

The investment will see new storage tanks built within the North Port industrial zone, allowing bitumen to be unloaded directly from ships and stored before being distributed throughout the country. The project is expected to strengthen the port’s role as an important logistics hub for liquid bulk cargo. (poslovni.hr)

Modernising port infrastructure

The new terminal will consist of several heated storage tanks designed specifically for bitumen, which must be kept at high temperatures to remain in liquid form. Once finally fully operational, the facility will allow larger quantities of bitumen to be imported by sea, reducing reliance on road transport and improving supply security for construction companies involved in highway, road and infrastructure projects throughout Croatia.

Strategic importance for the construction sector

Demand for bitumen remains closely linked to infrastructure investment, as the material is a key ingredient in asphalt used for roads, motorways and airport runways. By expanding storage capacity in Split, the port hopes to improve supply efficiency, reduce delivery times and provide greater flexibility during periods of high demand, particularly as Croatia continues investing in transport infrastructure.

Expanding split port’s overall cargo business

While the Port of Split is best known as Croatia’s busiest passenger port, it also handles a significant volume of commercial cargo through its North Port facilities. The addition of a dedicated bitumen terminal is expected to diversify cargo operations, strengthen the port’s industrial role and support future growth in maritime freight traffic alongside its expanding passenger business.
