Croatian Roads Officially Better Than German Autobahn

July the 18th, 2023 – Fantastic news for Croatian roads, which have been deemed to be better than Germany’s very own celebrated Autobahn.

I grew up in Britain, and everyone always laughs at me whenever I talk about how incredible Croatian roads are. I’ve spent a lot of time on them, and the smoothness is always fascinating to me even after nine years here. Carved into rugged mountains and sometimes in very ”road hostile” environments, and there’s rarely a bump to be felt. Unlike in the UK, where you need to hang on to your fillings the second you get north of London.

Official praise for Croatian roads

Now it’s official, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has declared Croatian roads, more specifically the motorway network, as being among the absolute best in Europe and beyond it.

As Darko Bicak/Poslovni Dnevnik writes, although there are objections to the currently high prices and an inefficient charging model that creates enormous crowds during the summer at toll booths, it is a well-known fact that Croatian roads and the motorway network is among the best.

Whether they be from elsewhere across Europe or from much further away, this has been confirmed by numerous tourists, transport operators, businessmen and intending travellers for years now.

12th out of approximately 200 countries

ccording to data from the World Economic Forum, Croatian roads and their infrastructure are serious competitor in the global framework, and according to this analysis, the country has come in an impressive twelfth place out of a total of about 200 analysed countries.

Better than Germany’s Autobahn

According to the WEF survey, the analysed countries were rated from one to seven for their road infrastructure, and Croatia received a high 5.6. In 1st place, as it is for many other things, is Singapore with a rating of 6.5. Singapore is closely followed by the Netherlands with 6.4, Switzerland with 6.3, Hong Kong and Japan have 6.1 each, and Austria, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates have 6 each. South Korea and Oman were rated with 5.9, and ahead of Croatia is Spain with 5.7. Denmark and Taiwan also got the same rating as Croatia, followed by Luxembourg, Qatar, the United States of America, France and Finland. The Top 20 list is closed by Germany, whose Autobahn was rated 5.3.
