January the 7th, 2025 – Croatian schools are set to ramp up their security and safety measures following the tragic attack at a Prečko (Zagreb) school back in December.

As Morski writes, the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth has opened up a public consultation on amendments to two Regulations which will introduce a new job position in schools. That position is an operational security and civil protection officer, as the ministry reported.

Amendments to the Regulations on the scope of work of the secretary and administrative, technical and support tasks performed in primary schools are necessary to ensure better Croatian school security. That includes the protection of students and school staff, as well as the prevention of possible situations of increased risk.

Croatian schools up and down the country will enjoy better security as we go forward, with the operational security and civil protection officer performing tasks related to the protection of both persons and property. That also includes protection from fires and explosions, as well as civil protection.

When it comes to the specific tasks this new employee will need to perform, they include protecting people and property from illegal behaviour (unlocking and locking the school, visiting all rooms, checking the correctness of video surveillance, systems and devices, lighting, verifying identities) and protecting against fire and explosions.

This job description also includes civil protection and crisis management (checking evacuation routes and exits, and performing evacuations and rescues if needed). They’ll also deal with problematic student behaviour, and data and information protection in order to provide Croatian schools with much better security.
