January the 28th, 2025 – The recent Croatian retail boycott was a success, and another is planned for this coming Friday. In another show of defiance, Croats have been heading across the border to shop in Slovenia.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, it’s never been much of a rarity for Croats to shop across the border in Slovenia or Hungary, but it’s happening more and more frequently now as prices in Croatia continue to baffle most. As a result of spiralling prices for even the most basic of goods, people have been heading to Ilirska Bistrica, a small Slovenian municipality. It’s transformed into a shopping Mecca of sorts.
Mirela, a Croat from Rijeka often does her bigger shop in Slovenia. In fact, she crosses the border for that purpose alone at least twice a month.

“The prices in Croatia are going crazy, they’re rising to abnormal levels day by day, I think it has really gone beyond all measure at this point. In Slovenia we spent 180 euros, and probably saved ourselves around 50 or 60 euros, for sure! All of the yogurts being sold here are more or less over one euro, and over the border you can find them for a mere 30 cents,” Mirela told RTL.
“A litre of yogurt costs 99 cents. Customers, outraged by the prices in Croatia, say the differences are drastic. In Croatia, you’ll definitely spend 200 euros or more on food. In Slovenia we spent 152 euros, and our trolley is always full, the car is loaded to the maximum and we go there once a month,” said Josip from Rijeka.
“I’m angry, that’s why I’ve chosen to shop in Slovenia because it’s worth buying stuff in Slovenia or Italy than in Croatia! Why? Because our people have raised prices to the point of insanity, everyone wants to get rich quickly and that’s simply not right. Until Croatia finally decides to lower its prices, I’d recommend all Croats to go to Italy and Slovenia to shop,” Miroslav concluded for RTL.
