DPDS Wants to Renovate Prevlaka Fortress, What About City Monuments?

Lauren Simmonds

While Prevlaka fortress is indeed in desperate need of a makeover, are the city’s monuments being neglected?

As Dubrovacki Dnevnik reports on the 10th of October, 2017, the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities recently announced that they’re ready to renew the fortress at Prevlaka, you’d think that is a good thing, no? Unfortunately, this statement has caused a proverbial wave of negative comments because the duty of that particular society is primarily to care about the monuments and heritage within the City of Dubrovnik.

It is certainly commendable that this society cares about the history, heritage and the preservation and renovation of monuments of all kinds in the area of the entire former autonomous Dubrovnik Republic, but, as has been rightly stated, in the historical core itself, some monuments and various other examples of the Pearl of the Adriatic’s rich history that aren’t exactly in the best of shapes can be found.

A reader of Dubrovacki Dnevnik has sent the local portal a concerning photograph that acts as hard proof of this claim.

Many believe that now the summer season is over, the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities should show greater sensitivity towards the invaluable heritage and monuments within the city’s UNESCO core.
