Meet This Year’s “Noćnjak” Champion Olive Oil Producers

Annual Noćnjak international awards were given out to best olive oil producers 

Even though Istria was named the best olive oil region in the world by Flos Olei, many Croatians (author included) will tell you that they prefer olive oils produced in Dalmatia, and on March 20, 2016, during the annual international Noćnjak awards in Bol on island Brač, Dalmatian producers were the ones who took home most medals.

Family farm Županović Radoslav from Kruševo – Primošten is this year’s champion for packaged extra virgin olive oil made out of oblica olive sort, while Božidar Šoša from Zadar is this year’s absolute champion for quality of open extra virgin olive oil made from two olive sorts. Šoša’s oil was one of the highest scored olive oils ever since the beginning of Noćnjak awards, with 99,55 out of possible 100.

Producers from Zadar region had a great year, since they went home with 13 gold and 5 silver medals and several awards for products made out of olive oil.

More than 300 olive oil samples from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Italy were sent in for this year’s edition of Noćnjak along with more than 80 different products made from olive oil.

Apart from the Zadar region, other parts of Dalmatia were also successful, champion product made out of olive oil is the Spa body peeling with olive oil and sea salt made by Sympatico from Solin, while the best cosmetics product (of course, made out of olive oil) is the rose and olive cream made by Krste Matulić from Pašman.

All in all, it was another very successful year for Croatian olive oil producers, and the Minister of Agriculture Darko Horvat was there to congratulate them all announcing that the Ministry will soon start working on a new Cooperative Act which will be written by producers and members of various cooperatives.
