ZAGREB, May 23, 2018 – The Truth about the Istanbul Convention civil initiative on Wednesday reported that in the first week of collecting signatures in a campaign to call a referendum on revoking the Istanbul Convention, it had collected 215,000 signatures, and that they still needed 160,000 signatures for a referendum to be called.

Addressing a press conference, the NGO’s representatives called on citizens “who care for family values, Croatian culture and tradition” to sign the petition in the four remaining days of the campaign.

Another civil initiative, The People Decide, calling for amendments to the election law, on Tuesday said that despite obstruction by authorities in several towns, it had collected 205,000 signatures, that it was collecting 25,000 signatures every day and that it believed it would collect the required amount of signatures by the set deadline.

Both initiatives have until 27 May to collect about 375,000 signatures, which accounts for 10% of the total number of voters, in order for a referendum to be called.
