Dubrovnik Forum Underlines Importance of Comprehensive Approach to Migrations

ZAGREB, September 1, 2018 – The problem of migrations should be tackled at its root and requires a comprehensive approach, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Marija Pejčinović Burić said at the end of the 13th edition of the Dubrovnik Forum on Saturday.

This year, the forum brought together 250 participants: politicians, diplomats nongovernmental activists and political analysts.

The Croatian foreign minister, who was the moderator of the first panel on “Defining Challenges – Considering Solutions”, told the press that it was a general conclusion that the problem of migrations required a comprehensive approach with efforts directed at the resolution of the problem at its root. Furthermore, these efforts should also include cooperation between the EU and third countries, the minister said.

One of the three panels within forum was “Increasing Crisis Resilience by Countering Fake News and Media Manipulation” and the moderator, Croatian Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Koržinek, told the press that participants in this panel had discussed the methods to counter fake news and prevent media manipulation in democracies where the trust of members of the public in institutions is essential. She called for strengthening media literacy and for regulating this area.

During the third panel on “Increasing Crisis Resilience through Improved Interconnectivity” the participants spoke about diversification of energy supply routes and strengthening infrastructure connectivity.

This year’s forum dedicated on the theme “Strengthening Resilience – the Mediterranean, Europe and the Western Balkans” was officially opened by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
