Čačić Appointed as the New Head Coach of the Croatian National Football Team

A very predictable and slightly underwhelming choice for Croatia’s new head coach.

The meeting of the Executive Board of the Croatian Football Federation began at noon. Davor Šuker and other members were deciding on the new national team coach. However, since the only candidate was Ante Čačić, there was no real uncertainty. And the official confirmation of the news arrived shortly before 3 pm, reports Vecernji List on September 21, 2015.

At the press conference after the meeting of the Executive Board, the Croatian Football Federation president Davor Šuker said: “The head coach was appointed unanimously. He have discussed this issue and came up with the best solution. I am pleased with this choice, just like I was pleased with all the previous decisions we had made. We wanted to select the coach who will take us to the European Championship or the World Cup.”

Šuker then continued: “Our main criteria is that we should believe in the coach. We allowed Niko Kovač just two bad matches. I appeal for unity of all segments of society, since the main thing is to go through. Čačić’s contract ends on July 31, 2018.”

Šuker refused to say which other candidates were interviewed, “because it would not be fair to Čačić”. He also did not say who will be Čačić’s assistants. Šuker explained that Čačić will give further information at the press conference which will be held on Tuesday.

He also commented on the fact that Romeo Jozak will sit on the bench next to Čačić. “As usual, people always seek something to criticize about the Croatian Football Federation. Jozak will not choose the team, he will just sit on the bench. I do not think Čačić would want to have a prompter. I have never seen a coach who would choose worse over better players”, said Šuker. “Congratulations to Dinamo and its three points in the Champions League”, concluded Šuker.

Čačić’s first decision will have to be made as early as today, since he has to announce the names of the candidates for matches against Bulgaria and Malta. “It will not be a problem, we will do it all right. We have to send the list of names to UEFA before midnight”, said Čačić.
