The Croatia men’s handball team look forward to two friendlies against Sweden – but who is on the team?

Coach Lino Červar has released a list of 27 players to account for two friendly matches against Sweden, reports Gol.hr on March 5, 2018.

The lineup, however, includes players who have chosen to leave the national team after the recent European Championships in Croatia – they include Mirko Alilović, Igor Vori, Ivan Čupić, Denis Buntić, Jakov Gojun and Marko Kopljar, which Červar revealed at today’s press conference.

“Jakov Gojun, Marko Kopljar, Mirko Alilović and Ivan Čupić have withdrawn from the national team for their reasons,” the coach said.

Červar, apart from changes in the team, also revealed his new professional team.

“My first assistant will be Davor Dominiković, an Olympian and world champion. Igor Vori will be the director of the national team. He has stopped with active play but will still be dedicated to the national team. The goalkeeping coach will be Mirko Bašić who is already in touch with our goalkeepers,” Červar announced.

“I was surprised by the call. It is a great honor and obligation. I have the experience of being the assistant trainer in Dubrava,” said Davor Dominiković.

Though Vori has an entirely new role, he remains working with the team.

“First of all, thank you to everyone in the Federation for giving me a chance to stay with my handball family. I am certain that I’m going to do my best as I did on the court. I’m happy, and a new challenge is ahead of me. There will be plenty of new names, but they have to pull up their sleeves and work,” said the former captain.

The Croatian handball team will play two friendly matches against Sweden who lost to Spain in the finals of the European Championship this year.

These games will be two excellent opportunities for Červar to see what the newcomers are worth, but also the senior players who will face Montenegro in the qualifying rounds of the World Cup. These games will be played in June, and the exact terms have not yet been determined. It is only known that Croatia will host the first match between June 8 and 10 and that they will play in Podgorica between June 12 and 14.
