Marin Čilić had a two set lead, he had three match points, and many more chances, but the great Swiss turned it all around and came back to win the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championships.
Marin Čilić had it all on July, 6. 2016, but has lacked concentration in the crucial moments of the quarter-finals match at the Central Court of All England Club, and in the end, he lost to Roger Federer 6-7(4), 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(9), 6-3.
Čilić will be looking back at many moments of this match. First, he had three break points in a row at the third set, with 3-3 on the scoreboard. He did not take advantage, and instead of finishing the match, Federer won the third.
In the fourth, Čilić had three match points, the first one when leading 5-4, another one with the 6-5 lead, and the third was in the tie-break, with the score 7-6 for the Croat in the 13th game.
Marin has repeated his Wimbledon result from the last two years, and even though it is a great success, he will have trouble forgetting this chance to grasp a place in the semis.
A victorious Roger Federer spoke on court, seconds after the match:
“Marin is one of the nicest guys on the tour so I feel sorry for him but I’m delighted. The dream goes on.”
