Video: Osijek Coach (Almost) Caught Smoking During Cibalia Match?

An example of what not to do during a football match, especially when you’re the coach.

Many football coaches have turned to smoking cigarettes as their preferred method for coping with stress over the years, reports Index.hr on August 30, 2017.

From Ćiro Blažević to Johan Cruyff, football’s greatest have been seen lighting up during trying (and not so trying) times, so why not Zoran Zekić, coach of NK Osijek today?

Well, considering the year is 2017, this habit is now severely frowned upon, and unlike the times of the football greats mentioned above, not only is smoking forbidden on the football pitch, but those breaking the law could be subject to very high penalties.

During the Cibalia and Osijek match played over the weekend for the seventh round of the Croatian First League, Osijek’s Zekić found himself in one of those nerve-wracking football situations as his team was losing in the Slavonian derby with less than 20 minutes to go. Since he had made all of the changes he could, Zekić turned to the only comfort he had left – his cigarettes.

Zekić can be seen pulling a cigarette out and bringing it to his mouth, with a lighter ready in his other hand. Just as the coach was about to light the cigarette, a wave of consciousness overcame him, and in that crucial moment, he felt as though a television camera was filming him. He put the unlit cigarette away. Phew.

Zekić’s reaction has become a hit on social media and can best be compared to teenagers getting caught smoking by their parents.

If anything, this will give you a good hump day laugh. Welcome to the Croatian First League in 2017.
