Daniela Rogulj

Rijeka is the winner of the ICT project award for promoting energy efficiency within the European project iURBAN.

Rijeka was recognized with the Green Digital Charter award after beating out the cities of Amsterdam and Valencia in the competition. The award was presented by the International Association EUROCITIES reports Novi List and Businessin.hr on January 27, 2017.

Since 2013, Rijeka has carried out the European project iURBAN – a project that aims to promote energy efficiency in cities involving various types of facilities including buildings, public lighting, and heating. The collected data is then used as the basis for the development of IT solutions, which is further used to direct the city administration to be more energy efficient. For example, companies such as Energa help optimize the tariff policy to users which enables a more efficient procurement of raw materials.

The International Association EUROCITIES – which is a network of major European cities founded in 1986 – brings together local authorities from 130 cities and 35 partner cities from 35 European countries. EUROCITIES represents the interests of its members and participates in dialogue with European institutions on policies relating to cities and areas that include economic development, environment, transport and mobility, social issues, culture, information and knowledge, and services of general interest.

The Green Digital Charter signatories are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions with the use of information and communications technologies.
