Just over a month ago, TCN wrote about how Dubrovnik should see 1.1 million visitors to the walls by the end of the year. On Thursday afternoon, Dubrovnik got one step closer.

On Thursday afternoon, for the first time in history, the millionth ticket was sold in a single year for city walls of Dubrovnik, reports HRTurizam. The lucky millionth visitor to the Dubrovnik walls was Therese Kunze from Germany.

Secretary of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities (DPDS) Denis Orlić said that Thursday’s event is bittersweet because UNESCO guidelines provide for up to 8,000 visitors a day in Dubrovnik’s historical center, but during the season there are so many visitors, with this year’s daily record reaching a little more than 10,000 visitors.

According to the planned decline of visitors, ie. limiting the daily limit of tourists, the DPDS announced an increase in ticket prices from next year. Instead of the previous cost of 120kn per ticket for the Dubrovnik city walls, next year’s price will be 150kn.

In the first eight months of 2016, 785,000 tickets have been sold to walk the famous city walls of Dubrovnik. As compared to this same period last year, an increase of 73,000 tickets, or more than 10%, have been sold according to Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities (DPDS). August had the most visitors in a single day, reaching 10,300 visitors.
