Klis Fortress has a new visual identity and is seeing more visitors than ever – 2018 is on its way to being the most successful year yet.
While Split has been a hit, Klis, and the famous Klis Fortress might be taking away some of the Dalmatian capital’s thunder. Find out why as Dalmacija Danas reports the details on May 18, 2018.
“In all likelihood, we can say that 2018 will be an extremely successful year for the Klis Fortress and Klis, as they both have achieved many excellent results and goals we have been pursuing for the past five years. Recently, with the Government of the Republic of Croatia, we signed a contract on the transfer of the Klis Fortress to the Klis Municipality, and the fortress, after 500 years, is back in the hands of the descendants of those who built it and defended it. This great news follows a significant increase in visitors to our fortress, which has just received a new and truly brilliant visual identity, and we continue to work on many projects for the revitalization and reconstruction of the Klis Fortress,” said Jakov Vetma, the Mayor of the Klis Municipality.

In the first four months of 2018, the Klis Fortress recorded 76 percent more visits compared to the same period in 2017, which was also hugely successful and during which a total of 47,000 visitors saw the fortress. This number was only 8,000 visitors a year a couple of years ago, but by choosing a new direction of tourism development, primarily based on rich historical and cultural heritage, the results are better year after year. Tourism focused on cultural heritage, active vacations and gastronomy is the development direction the municipality has chosen, and the Klis Fortress will continue to play a critical role in the benefit of all inhabitants of the municipality.
For the 370th anniversary of the liberation of Klis from the Turks, as well as the numerous fortress revitalization projects and forthcoming manifestations, a new visual identity of the Klis Fortress was presented by Ante Filipović Grčić from the Šibenik studio 2fg. The new visual identity of the Klis Fortress is based on Klis’ cliff position in the gorge separating Kozjak and Mosor, which is also the key to Dalmatia from the Adriatic coast to Inland Dalmatia, and vice versa. When explaining the origin of the name of Klis, some etymologists consider it to be from the Greek word ‘kleis,’ which translates to ‘key,’ and the symbol of a key is visible in the new logo.

“All of these achievements and results were created the year we celebrate the 370th anniversary of the liberation of Klis and the surrounding parts from the Turks, where our fortress played a key role. 2018 is also the Year of Cultural Heritage in Europe, which we will certainly contribute to with numerous projects and activities. I am pleased to say that our work and dedication to Klis, a more vibrant tourist offer and the restoration and preservation of our cultural heritage have been fruitful and we will continue to develop in this direction,” concluded Vetma.
