August 29, 2023 – The fabulous Spancirfest 2023 has come to an end. American Croatiaphile Steve Tsentserensky captured the atmosphere on his first visit to Varazdin.

Where is the most beautiful city or town in Croatia?

Many will answer Dubrovnik, Hvar, Rovinj, Korcula, Split, or several others on the Adriatic coast. And they are certainly stunning.

But on a beautiful day, at the right time of year, with the streets of its old town full, there really is nothing quite like Varazdin, the exquisite former capital of Croatia, and my home for 5 of the 21 years in Croatia so far. At least in my opinion.

And if you are looking to experience Varazdin at its very best, there is no better time to visit than during the largest street festival in Croatia, the annual Spancirfest, which takes place in August each year.

This year, we sent American Croatiaphile and documenter of some of the finest shots of this beautiful land, Steve Tsentserensky, to check out one of the coolest festivals in the Croatian calendar. For his part, Steve could scarcely believe that Franz Ferdinand would be playing – and for free.

Steve spent the earlier part of the day walking the gorgeous streets of the old town without the crowds before hooking up with friends and enjoying the excellent food and wine on offer. A selection of his photos from one more day in paradise can be found below.

Just an hour from Zagreb, Varazdin and Spancirfest 2023 are but one example of the many fabulous day trips to be had from the capital Zagreb. A lovely, lovely town any time of year, but for the vibe, put Spancirfest in your calendars for August 2024.
