The Guardian Lists Zagreb in the Top 10 for Winter City Breaks

Daniela Rogulj

On 10 December, 2016, The Guardian continued their love affair with Croatia and included Zagreb among the top 10 European cities for a short winter break, describing it as one of the youngest but also one of the most fascinating capitals of Europe.

As for the Zagreb attractions you shouldn’t miss, the Guardian emphasizes the Hrelić flea market, the many museums, restaurants such as Mundoaka and Tac, cafes including Café u Dvoristu and Finjak, and of course Tkalciceva street…with an even bigger emphasis on trying “štrukli”, the sour cream and cheese-stuffed pastry that we all know and love.

“In winter, Zagreb comes alive: Zrinjevac park teems with Christmas decorations and, it seems, half the city’s population. There’s an ice rink at the railway station and unusual Christmas shopping on Tomićeva and Bogovićeva streets. Zagreb has good connections to Sljeme, for skiing or snowboarding right next door to the city,” writes The Guardian, while adding that the “lovely village” of Samobor just outside of the city is highly recommended.

The other ideal winter city breaks in Europe recommended by The Guardian are Sarajevo, Ljubljana, Poprad in Slovakia, Baden-Baden and Memmingen in Germany, Åre-Östersund in Sweden, Poznan in Poland, Tromso in Norway and Sibiu in Romania.
