“For a moment, it felt like I was part of an MTV music video.”
The Sun – the daily tabloid newspaper published in the UK and Ireland – gave praise to Ultra Europe which was held in Split at Poljud stadium last year. Written by Sun writer Lee Walpole, the text was published in the printed edition on January 16, 2017.
As most of us in Croatia already know, Ultra is one of the biggest Electronic Dance Music festivals in the world, and The Sun writes that it attracts 150,000 fans from around the globe. Lee Walpole and his friend attended the festival from the massive spectacle in Split to the popular parties on the islands.
What most of us remember about Ultra 2016 was day one being canceled due to strong bura winds. While this caused massive backlash amongst most of the partygoers, Walpole and his friend didn’t seem to mind – deciding instead to start their journey using the 5-star facilities at Hotel President in Solin.
For day two, the festival was back on and “Croatia’s normally beautiful climate had returned”. While Walpole claims he doesn’t know much of who was playing the festival, he, along with the thousands of other festival-goers were delighted to hear that many of the artists meant to play day one would take the stage for day two. Walpole calls the atmosphere at Poljud “electric and like nothing I have ever experienced. I was hooked.”
Next stop was Brac for the Yacht Regatta and Bol where “more than 500 partied during sunset”, followed by a trip to “Croatia’s most glitzy island” of Hvar. While Walpole claims that Ultra surely saved the best for last, he even goes on to say that Hvar reminded him of Monaco – only with bigger boats and more glamour.
Blissfully whisked away to the island of Vis for the closing party, Walpole recalls the “pumping tech-house tunes in a gig set inside an old fort” (also known as Fort George).
“The venue was the perfect spot to bring together the old and new — uniting the history of Croatia with the psychedelic sounds of modern tunes. They call people who attend the festival ‘Ultranauts’ — my trip was out of this world from start to finish,” Walpole concludes.
