Strolling through the open markets of Zagreb, you cannot avoid the bright red and striped sunshades. They originated as an umbrella which was part of the folk costume from the Šestine area of Zagreb. Šestine sits at the beginning of the Medvednica mountain to the north of Zagreb, around the Kulmer castle.
The Šestine folk costume was worn by locals until the 1960s, now found only at festivities. The name Šestine (referring to the number six) was born out of a commitment the locals had to the masters of the castle in Šestine. Their feudal fee was due on the sixth day of each week.
