The Don’ts of Visiting Dubrovnik: What You Need to Know Before You Go

Total Croatia News

Updated on:

Dubrovnik, Croatia, is a stunning gem on the Adriatic coast, famed for its medieval walls, historic charm, and stunning seaside views.

But before you head off to explore King’s Landing (yes, Game of Thrones fans, it’s the real deal), there are some essential “don’ts” you need to keep in mind. Here’s a guide to help you avoid common mistakes and make the most out of your trip to this beautiful but busy city.

1. Don’t Expect Peace and Quiet

Dubrovnik is one of Croatia’s most visited cities, and the crowds can be overwhelming, especially when cruise ships dock between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. During those hours, the main streets and attractions are packed with tourists. If you’re seeking serenity or that perfect photo op, you’ll have better luck wandering the back alleys early in the morning or later in the evening.

2. Don’t Forget Proper Footwear

The historic streets of Dubrovnik are made of polished stone that becomes extremely slick when wet. Even when dry, they can be tricky to walk on. If you’re planning to walk the city walls or navigate the steep staircases, wear sturdy walking shoes with a good grip. Avoid sandals or smooth-soled shoes—you’ll thank yourself later.

3. Don’t Ignore the Weather for Boat Trips

Planning to hop on a boat to one of the nearby islands? Check the weather first. Rough seas can lead to a very unpleasant experience, especially if you’re prone to seasickness. If it’s too windy or choppy, consider postponing or exploring the many nearby beaches instead.

4. Don’t Go to the Beach Unprepared

Many of Dubrovnik’s beaches are rocky, not sandy. Don’t forget to pack water shoes to make walking on the stones more comfortable. Renting a beach chair is also a good idea if you’re planning to relax for a few hours.

5. Don’t Skip the Museums and Churches

Too many visitors miss Dubrovnik’s rich history by only strolling through the old town and dining al fresco. Don’t make that mistake. Get a Dubrovnik Card and explore the Maritime Museum, the Franciscan and Dominican Monasteries, and the Cathedral. The architecture, art, and cultural artifacts are well worth the time.

6. Don’t Be Afraid of the Stairs

You’ll notice countless narrow stairways leading away from the main street (Stradun). Don’t shy away from climbing them. The farther you go from the main strip, the better the food and the lower the prices. Heading uphill away from the waterfront often leads to hidden local gems and cozy restaurants.

7. Don’t Stress About Last-Minute Accommodation (Unless It’s Peak Season)

Outside the peak summer months (June–August), finding a place to stay in Dubrovnik is relatively easy, even at short notice. Many locals rent out rooms or apartments, making it a flexible destination. However, during the busy season, it’s smart to book in advance.

8. Don’t Miss Your Cruise Ship

If you’re in Dubrovnik on a cruise, keep an eye on the time. Ships won’t wait for you. Be back well before departure—ideally by 5:30 p.m.—to avoid the nightmare of watching your ship sail away without you.

9. Don’t Miss a Day Trip to Mljet Island

If you’re craving a true escape from Dubrovnik’s busy streets, don’t miss a day trip to Mljet Island. Just 1 to 1.5 hours away by ferry, Mljet offers lush forests, crystal-clear saltwater lakes, and one of the oldest national parks in the Adriatic. You can paddle through Veliko and Malo Jezero, visit the 12th-century Benedictine monastery on St Mary’s islet, or hike and bike around serene trails. Mljet is perfect for nature lovers looking for quiet beaches, hidden caves like the mythical Odysseus Cave, and breathtaking views far from the city’s hustle. Ferries depart daily from Dubrovnik to Sobra, Polače, and Pomena. Tickets are affordable (around €8–10) and can be booked in advance through platforms like Simferry.

Dubrovnik is magical, no doubt about it. But like any popular destination, a little preparation goes a long way. Keep these don’ts in mind, and you’ll be well on your way to having a memorable, stress-free adventure in one of Europe’s most captivating coastal cities.
