July the 15th, 2026 – Despite the endless back and forth about high prices and value for money, Croatia has actually (and somewhat surprisingly) ranked 2nd as the most affordable Mediterranean destination for holiday costs.

Croatia has surprisingly been ranked as the 2nd most affordable Mediterranean holiday destination when comparing the overall price levels of goods and services, according to a new analysis by Deutsche Bank Research. Poslovni reports that despite ongoing (and endless) debate about rising prices, the study suggests Croatia remains one of the region’s better-value destinations for international visitors.

The research compared the cost of a broad basket of products and services across popular Mediterranean countries. Croatia ranked second only to Turkey in affordability, ahead of several major tourism competitors, including Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal and France. The findings contrast with the perception that Croatia has become one of Europe’s most expensive summer destinations.

The report is based on comparative national price levels rather than the cost of a typical holiday package. It measures the average prices of consumer goods and services, offering a broader picture of the relative cost of living and spending across destinations. Tourism experts note that accommodation prices, particularly during the peak summer season, can still vary very significantly depending on specific location and level of demand.

The findings come at a time when Croatia’s tourism industry has faced criticism over price increases in restaurants, accommodation and supermarkets. However, supporters of the sector argue that overall value for money remains competitive when compared with other Mediterranean destinations, particularly as inflation has affected countries across southern Europe.

With another busy summer season underway, the report offers a more nuanced perspective on Croatia’s competitiveness. While visitors may notice higher prices than in previous years, the broader comparison suggests the country continues to offer relatively good value within the Mediterranean market, especially when measured against many of its closest tourism rivals.
