July the 15th, 2026 – Zagreb International Airport is very keenly eyeing Wizz Air expansion regardless of a somewhat slower June this year.
Zagreb Airport recorded 438,178 passengers in June 2026, a modest increase of 0.5 percent compared with the same month last year. While growth slowed during the start of the peak summer season, the airport remains optimistic that new airline partnerships, particularly with low-cost carrier Wizz Air, could help drive future expansion.
Poslovni reports that throughout the initial six months of the year, Zagreb Airport handled just over two million passengers, representing an increase of approximately 7 percent compared with the first half of 2025. The figures continue the airport’s long-term recovery and growth trend, although June’s results were weaker than in previous months.
Zagreb Airport officials say one of their priorities is attracting Wizz Air, one of Europe’s largest low-cost airlines, to establish a stronger presence in Zagreb. The carrier currently operates only a limited number of routes from the Croatian capital, despite maintaining major bases in several neighbouring countries. Management believes additional Wizz Air services would improve connectivity, increase competition and offer passengers more affordable travel options.
The airport is also benefiting from continued route expansion by existing airlines. Croatia Airlines has introduced new seasonal services and increased frequencies on several routes, while Ryanair has continued to rapidly expand operations from its Zagreb base, helping maintain strong passenger numbers throughout the entire year.
Despite the relatively flat June performance, airport management remains confident that sustained airline growth and the addition of new routes will support continued passenger growth in the coming years. Securing a larger commitment from Wizz Air is seen as one of the key opportunities to strengthen Zagreb’s position as Croatia’s leading aviation hub.
