October the 2nd, 2023 – Forgotten Dalmatia (Zaboravljena Dalmacija) is an Instagram account attracting the attention of all those wanting to hop into a time machine on this stunning part of the Croatian coast.
Remember that old Croatian National Tourist Board slogan “The Mediterranean as it once was” from a few years ago? The Forgotten Dalmatia Instagram account embodies that entirely. For all those plagued with nostalgia for times gone by and a simpler way of life than the vast majority of us are used to in the modern day, Forgotten Dalmatia, run by Igor Goles, is well worth the follow.
Dalmatia through the centuries
Forgotten Dalmatia showcases all areas of Dalmatia, from the coastal part of the region to inland Dalmatia and the hinterland. The posts are of private photographs and also postcards sent from various locations, be they on the mainland or the islands, spanning the decades. Some are more modern, such as photos taken during the mid to late 20th century, while others date back to a time that stretches beyond living memory.
Forgotten Dalmatia (Zaboravljena Dalmacija) in book form
Forgotten Dalmatia quickly grew in popularity among nostalgia seekers wanting to taste this magical part of Croatia’s past before tourism became its strong point. The Forgotten Dalmatia website showcases a book (which is unfortunately sold out) which highlights ”the story of how it used to be”.
“Forgotten Dalmatia tells the story of how it used to be. It reminds us that we live in one of the most beautiful corners of the universe, it brings you closer to the authentic Dalmatia through photographs taken back during the time of the emergence of the photograph itself – during the middle of the nineteenth century, all the way up to the 1970s.”
In addition to images, the website (linked above) boasts a blog, a web shop, the postcards it showcases on a map and more.
