August the 8th, 2024 – Remember the old iPhone commercials? There’s an app for that. It turns out that’s true, and even the Zadar Cruise Port has one. It has introduced a handy application which allows you to measure the seawater quality.

As Josipa Ban/Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Zadar Cruise Port – GPH has introduced a novelty in its operations – an application for monitoring sea quality indicators.

The Zadar Cruise Port app was created by the Croatian company SeaCras, which specialises in the application of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the monitoring and preservation of the wider marine environment.

The new Zadar Cruise Port app is the commendable result of their specialisation and the overall ecological orientation of the Zadar Cruise Port – GPH. Following eighteen months of partnership, the app have two very important effects – ensuring transparency in controlling the impact of large cruise ships on the maritime environment, and preserving the health of the overall marine environment of Zadar County.

Via QR codes, which are strategically positioned in the passenger terminal, cruise ship guests, local residents and anyone interested can quickly, easily and free access the application from mobile phones and other devices and see data on the state of the sea around them.

The foundation of the new Zadar Cruise Port app is an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system that processes large amounts of data, including marine biochemical data, atmospheric data, human activity and high-resolution satellite imagery. AI algorithms developed by the SeaCras company continuously detect various pollution incidents and provide an assessment of the health of the sea at specific locations.

“Given the ever-increasing changes that the sea is experiencing, both naturally climatic and those caused by direct human action, it’s high time to apply advanced high technologies to monitor the quality of the sea. Only by using certain approaches can we change current business models and achieve long-term sustainable use and preservation of the marine environment,” emphasised Mario Špadina, the director of SeaCras.

the blue economy

The Zadar Cruise Port – GPH is also aware of the importance of monitoring the quality of sea water for the preservation of marine ecosystems, the protection of public health and the support of sustainable economic activities.

“The proper education and engagement of the local community, as well as the active participation of cruise ship guests in promoting sustainable tourism, are key to the long-term preservation of the sea and the sustainability of the destination itself. This ensures that future generations also enjoy the heritage of natural marine beauty and resources”, says Rebeka V. Pevec, general director of the Zadar Cruise Port.

The two companies emphasised that they’ll continue to monitor the quality and sustainability of the marine environment and that they will continue to report the results and their achievements to the public in a transparent manner.

This collaboration is an example of the positive changes that technology can bring to tourism and the blue economy, which makes up 25 percent of Croatian GDP. One of this country’s most valuable resources – the Adriatic Sea – must be preserved, and technology plays an increasingly important role in this.
