Ivo Karlović won the Croatian clash against Borna Čorić in the first round of Wimbledon.
The Wimbledon Championships started on June 27, 2016, at the All England Club. The first round brought a Croatian clash between the veteran Ivo Karlović and youngster Borna Čorić. The match was tight, but the experience of the Šalata Giant prevailed.
The first two sets were decided by a tie-break, as it usually does when Karlović is playing. Both tie-breaks went Karlović’s way, and in the third, Čorić lost his serve in the last game of the match. The final result was 7-6, 7-6. 6-4. In the second round, Karlović will face the winner of the Lack – Lorenzi match.
Croatian number one, Marin Čilić blasted the American player Brian Baker 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. Baker did not falter until the eighth game, when he was broken to love on a double fault, leaving Čilić to serve out for the set. He reached the set point with an ace, prompting his coach, Goran Ivanišević, the 2001 Wimbledon champion, to shout “one more”. Čilić duly delivered and was a set in front after 25 minutes.
Čilić has big hopes for this tournament: “Today was definitely a bit of an uncomfortable match for me. It was not one of my best performances, but I was keeping it very solid and serving really good when I needed to. I’m feeling pretty confident at the moment and my last few years at Wimbledon I have had good results, so that gives me big confidence. But I still have to deliver on court.”, the Croatian said for the official tournament web-site.
Donna Vekić played Venus Williams, five-time Wimbledon Champion, and even though the young Croatian served for the first set, experienced American battled back and won the match 7-6, 6-4.
