Čilić theough to the quarters after facing Kei Nishikori, after his opponent retired due to injury.

Marin Čilić is through to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon Championships after his opponent retired at the 6-1, 5-1 result on July 4, 2016.

The Croat wrapped up this rematch of the 2014 US Open final in 43 minutes, as the Japanese No.5 seed succumbed to an injury, having arrived at The Championships recovering from a rib problem that cut short his Halle campaign.

Nishikori, who has never reached the quarter-finals at The Championships, could not serve faster than 98mph and won just two points in the first five games of the match, as Čilić ran away with the opening set in just 16 minutes.

Undeterred, Nishikori did what he could to put the injury of out his mind and even broke back to level up at 1-1 early in the second set, moving with greater freedom along the baseline, even if his strokes lacked their usual venom.

Čilić went on to win the next three games before Nishikori called for the trainer, taking a painkiller while coaches Michael Chang and Dante Bottini urged him to quit. The world No.6 battled on for another game before finally heeding their advice.

Marin will face Roger Federer in the quarterfinals, and the Swiss recalled their last encounter at the Grand Slam, which Čilić won: „I still remember when Marin swept me from the court at the semi-finals of US Open two years ago. I hope to fight back“

We leave you with the highlights of that historic match for Marin Čilić, and hope that Marin will repeat his performance in the quarter-finals.
