Another young Croatian tennis name to look out for.
If you ask him what he expects from this tennis season, Borna Ćorić is very specific: he wants to win his first ATP tournament, to become one of the 30 best tennis players in the world, to achieve a good result at a Grand Slam tournament… The ambitions of the best teenager on the ATP Tour have been recognized by French television as well, which has included Ćorić among young athletes who will make their mark in 2016, reports Jutarnji List on January 4, 2016.
The player from Zagreb has found himself in an interesting company with nine other young athletes, including Bayern Munich footballer Kingsley Coman, French hurdler Wilhem Belocian, Slovak skier Petra Vlhová and another tennis player, Switzerland’s Belinda Benčić. France TV points out that last season Ćorić jumped from 95th to 44th place in the world rankings.
“His progress has been fantastic, but he failed to win his first tournament. However, with such confidence and experience which he gained during his first full season on the Tour, Borna will be the player to watch in 2016”, the French TV said.
Great expectations for Ćorić are shared by all the other Croatian players. Ivan Dodig predicted that he would win “not one, but several tournaments”, while Marin Ćilić pointed out that the progress is guaranteed. His coach Miles Maclagan said that he could see Borna in the Top 10.
“Borna is very ambitious, he works hard and has shown that he can win against tennis greats like Nadal and Murray. His next challenge is to have such victories become something which happens regularly. He must improve his tennis technique which will help him survive at the highest level of world tennis. Players like Đoković and Federer have excellent serve, and that is the key for their success”, Maclagan said.
In Chennai, Ćorić found out the name of his first opponent in 2016. That will be Spain’s Marcel Granollers, whom he defeated last year in the first round of the tennis tournament in Umag.
