Festival of Science is a week-long event, that has been happening in Croatia for the past 15 years, organized by the British Council, Technical Museum Nikola Tesla from Zagreb, most Croatian Universities, and many museums in Croatia. In the past few years the festival has been expanded to many cities (over 20 places, including some small places, such as Brod na Kupi, and just about all of the bigger towns in Croatia).
This year’s theme of the festival is “The Time”, and the slogan in “Time flies”. The time is the river without the return, in which we are all immersed, and the scientists have developed many ways to research the time. The time can be physical, psychological, historical and astronomical, an in the Croatian language the word for “time” is equal to the word for “weather”, so when we talk about time in Croatian we are talking about the meteorology as well.
The festival’s events started on Monday; luckily it will last until Saturday afternoon so you have more than enough time (pun intended!) to go to Zagreb’s Technical Museum Nikola Tesla, Faculty of Geodesy, Croatian Science Museum, Botanical Garden, Gajnice Library and others and enjoy some of the lectures, exhibitions, workshops and presentations designed for all ages.
In line with this year’s theme of the time, 160th anniversary of birth of one of the greatest scientists that have ever worked in Croatia – Andrija Mohorovičić will be celebrated. You can see the exhibition geophysicists have prepared to show us how Mohorovičić lived and worked, and to show us the conditions in which he worked as he made his discoveries. Faculty of Geodesy has prepared an exhibition showing some of the first Croatian cadastral maps, made in 1817 – so it’s their 200th anniversary as well! There’s also an exhibition prepared showing you how blind people are (were?) able to keep time, workshops on minerals, lecture on diamonds and time, workshop on how to solve some interactive mathematical puzzles and many, many more interesting events.
