Croatian Boxer Filip Hrgović Gets Closer to World’s Best: “I Can Compete with Anyone”

Daniela Rogulj

After another new victory, Croatia’s best boxer Filip Hrgović is getting closer to the world’s top.

The fourth professional appearance was the fourth win for Filip Hrgović, who defeated Irish boxer Sean Turner in the semifinals of the World Boxing Super Series, reports Gol.hr on February 28, 2018.

“I beat him smoothly in all rounds, I did not receive any serious kicks, and the opponent was such that there was simply no need to force the knockout. The fourth win is in my pocket, and we will go further,” Hrgović said after the victory.

With this new victory, Hrgović has already reached 41st in the world rankings, and his ambitions are getting bigger.

“We have decided to make one quick trip, a shortened one, and from match to match, I will face stronger and stronger opponents. This way, the next opponent will be a very serious one, maybe someone in the top 20 in the world, which is the top of the line. It will be harder and harder. I’m looking forward to it, and I’m ready for everyone.”

Hrgović’s next match is on May 11, 2018, in Djibouti, Saudi Arabia. Filip says that it is possible that the opponent is also one of the former challengers for the title of World Champion.

“And then, if it is in God’s plan, I believe I can then compete against the top-ranked boxers like Joshua, Parker, and Wilder.”

What does Filip still need to do to be equated with such names?

“I’ve been playing with all the best boxers of today, and I know that I can handle all of them. Technically, I think I can compete with everyone.”

Still, there is something Filip cannot be sure of, which he particularly points out.

“The only thing you can never know is how you will behave when you get to those matches where the whole world is watching. You have a lot to lose, you have a lot to gain, and these are things nobody can prepare you for, and nobody knows how to react when the time comes. I believe I’m a champion and I will handle them well.”

If Filip continues to win, he believes that he would have a chance at the title in the next year or year and a half. But time is less relevant here; the most important thing is Filip’s ultimate goal.

“Watch me, cheer me on, and we will go little by little…”

Filip Hrgović is a 25-year-old boxer from Zagreb who was a bronze medallist in the men’s super heavyweight category at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
