The Mediterranean as It Once Was: 1950s Opatija (VIDEO)

October 9, 2018 – Continuing our look at the Mediterranean as it once was, today’s visit is to the Grand Old Dame in her prime – Opatija in the 1950s and 1960s.

While Hvar is celebrating 150 years of organised tourism in Europe following the founding of the Hvar Health Society back in May, 1868, tourism in Croatia itself has a founding father a little further up the coast. 

The first holiday house in Opatija, the Villa Angiolina, was built by Iginio Scarpa back in 1844, and it is now credited as the birth of individual tourism in Croatia.

Opatija has blossomed as a destination since, and its healthy climate has been a magnet for tourists ever since. Its magnificent villas and 12-km Lungomare coastal promenade offer a very different tourism experience from its neighbouring destinations, and Opatija has long been popular with the rich and famous.
