Davis Cup Trophy to be Exhibited in Zagreb For First Time in 13 Years

The Davis Cup trophy will be displayed in Zagreb for the second time! 

After Croatia’s impressive Davis Cup win against France last month, for the second time in the history of Croatian tennis, the famous trophy will once again come to Zagreb under the auspices of the Museum of Arts and Crafts, where it was exhibited for the first time thirteen years ago – or precisely in 2005, reports HRT on December 5, 2018. 

Croatia’s top tennis players – Marin Čilić, Ivan Dodig, Borna Ćorić, Mate Pavić, Franko Škugor, Viktor Galović and Nikola Mektić, led by coach Željko Krajan – achieved this magnificent victory for Croatia and the Croatian Tennis Federation, who are now among the ten national teams who have won the oldest team tennis competition (118 years) more than once. Croatia’s final against France in Lille was also the final time the Davis Cup was played in the format we know it today. 

The Davis Cup trophy will be exhibited in the atrium of the Museum of Arts and Crafts, which was built according to the designs of famous German architect Hermano Bolle 138 years ago. The trophy will be on display for the many visitors in Zagreb for Advent, or sports lovers in general, until November 2019.

The Davis Cup trophy consists of three levels with the country names and cup winners. The top, however, boasts the actual cup which is invaluable. Created in 1899, Dwight Fille Davis valued it at $400,000 that year. The value of the Davis Cup trophy today far exceeds his starting price.

Recall that in 2005, the Davis Cup was won by Ivan Ljubičić, Mario Ančić, Goran Ivanišević and Ivo Karlović, and coach Nikola Pilić in Bratislava. Immediately after the trophy was sent to Croatia, it was displayed at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb.
