I haven’t laughed as loudly all year. So loudly in fact that almost every table at Sidro stopped talking to look around. Head barman Matko interrupted his babysitting duties to shoot me a smile. Or was it a scowl?
At Total Hvar, we try and cover all aspects of the island. We have some way to go, and we are certainly enjoying experiencing and reporting on the rich diversity of life on this wonderful island. One thing we have learned this year is that the island is perceived in many different ways by many different people, and listening to everyone’s viewpoints leads to a more representative picture.
The reason for my laughter was a funny story I was being told at the end of yet another business meeting (a productive one this time…). We were discussing tourism and apartment rentals, when the couple I was meeting told me about their recent experience of a guest staying on Hvar. He was totally enthusiastic about the island, loving every aspect of it.
“The beaches were amazing. That water so clear. The women are stunning. The food, the wine, the architecture. Perfect in every way. There is just one thing I don’t understand. In all this amazing setting and beautiful people, why are the prostitutes so old and unattractive? There are lots of them at the ferry and coming into town and at the bus station, and I didn’t fancy any of them.”
