Croatia’s leading private hospital becomes a teaching base for Faculties of medicine and kinesiology
Split University, Croatia’s second largest University keeps expanding its teaching base, this time adding one of Croatia’s best private hospitals, specialty hospital St. Catherine’s in Zagreb / Zabok to its long list of partners. A cooperation agreement was signed this weekend and as of next summer, students will have the chance to learn the ropes from the very best in the field of sports injuries and pain management.
St Catherine’s hospital is a member of the “Leading Hospitals of The World” and it has been successfully treating some of Croatia’s best known athletes including the US Open winner Marin Čilić, Luka Modrić, Mario Mandžukić etc..
Prof. Šimun Anđelinović, Rector of the University of Split was more than happy to comment on the new partnership: „We are constantly trying to improve and this time we wanted to address the problem which was often raised by both our students and medical professional alike – lack of practical work in our faculties. Our students were simply not prepared enough for the work force and with this new partnership we will give them an opportunity to learn from the very best. So, we changed the University statute and we accepted the new teaching base regulations, defining the meaning of a teaching base. Teaching base is a teaching facility that combines practical work with all theoretical knowledge acquired at the University. Next summer, according to our plans, 500 to 2000 students will be involved in practical work within our teaching bases across the country and they will be guided by selected mentors that will be thoroughly prepared for our teaching programme. This is a very complex task and during this academic year we will finish preparing contracts with the best available institutions to ensure high quality of practical work. I am very pleased to see that our Medical and Kinesiology Faculties, both of which have scientific departments, thought a contract with specialty hospital St. Catherine’s will be of great value to them because it will give them the opportunity to get firsthand knowledge about sports injuries and their treatment. This kind of an expert approach is the foundation of any future teaching and scientific process”.
We also managed to catch the member of the Supervisory Board of St. Catherine’s hospital prof. Dragan Primorac and ask him to elaborate on the newly signed agreement “The philosophy of the University of Split revolves around their goal to become one of the European centres of excellence and the cooperation agreement we just signed with the Faculties of medicine and kinesiology is another step in that direction. So, St. Catherine’s hospital, as a European centre of excellence and partner of many leading hospitals in the US, Germany and Israel and as an institution which provides their patients with complete service from initial diagnostics to operations and rehabilitation, has put itself at the disposal of University of Split. All students will now get their practical training an education in one place and when we think of how many top level athletes from this part of Europe were treated in our hospital and knowing that we are the official hospital of the National Football Federation, football clubs Hajduk and Split (among many others), and that even some NBA players are coming to us for treatment, students can be sure that this cooperation is a great opportunity for them. They will be able to familiarize themselves with state of the art equipment and the very best procedures in diagnostics, operations and post operation rehabilitation so that they may put it to good use once they get their degree”.
