You’re just in time to get yourself into the amateur tennis tournament on Korčula.
Tennis Club “Mot” from the island organizes “Istruga Open”, the first ever tournament for the amateur, recreational tennis players on the island. Ivan Protić, a tennis coach and the president of the club explained to us what is planned, when, where and who’s invited:
– The tournament will be played on June 30th, in Istruga bay, near Smokvica, where there are two asphalt tennis courts. The idea of the tournament is primarily to facilitate introductions and getting together as many as possible tennis enthusiasts from the island of Korčula, as well as the Pelješac peninsula. The tournament will be played in two categories for singles, those under 35 in one category and the veterans over 35 in the other. In the pairs tournament there will be no categories because the pairs game reduces such differences. Anyone can apply, but mostly male players are expected to participate. There are several women on the island who would like to play tennis, but they don’t know other women they could play with, especially the ones from other places on Korčula. That is one of the reason the club has taken on organizing such events, to investigate if there’s enough interest to start an amateur tennis scene on Korčula, which might work wonderfully, either through a form of a league, or various tournaments. For this, the first tournament, we’re expecting 20-30 participants, and a lot of fun at Istruga!
So, if you’re an amateur tennis player from Korčula (or Pelješac or any other place where it is possible for you to spend a day in Istruga), the time to apply is now, as the “registration” for the tournament finishes on June 25th, and you can call +385 (0)97-701-4703 and tell mr. Protić you’d like to come. The fee is 100 kn/person for the entire tournament, which will be played in “round-robin” system, using Tecnifiber Balls, as we already said, on hard-court surface. Important piece of additional information: the courts are literally 20 meters from the Istruga sandy beach near Brna.
