Civil Protection Exercise Performed in Zagreb

More than 200 members of the Civil Protection Units of the City of Zagreb participated in the civil protection exercise, held yesterday at Jelačić Square.

In the presence of mayor Milan Bandić, associates and numerous citizens, the Office of Emergency Management held a civil protection exercise at Jelačić Square under the title ‘Urban Rescue 2017’, reports Zagreb.hr on September 23, 2017. 

More than 200 members of the Civil Protection units of the City of Zagreb participated in the civil protection exercise, which included the rescue of injured people from high buildings. The exercise was conducted on Saturday, September 23. The aim of the exercise was to further improve the coordination of work and activities of all emergency services in case of an earthquake in Zagreb area.

“The biggest threat to Zagreb are earthquakes, such as the one measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale that hit Zagreb back in 1880. We are preparing for such disaster, and we are the only city in the Republic of Croatia that has the appropriate civil protection,” said the head of the Emergency Management Office Pavle Kalinić.

The City of Zagreb currently has 702 trained members of the special rescue units trained to rescue victims from ruins, and another eight thousand civil protection members who could be mobilized via SMS in case a disaster hits the city.

Besides 200 members of special units and civil protection units (from city districts of Gornji Grad – Medveščak, Donji Grad, Podsljeme and Maksimir), the exercise was also attended by the Ministry of Interior – Police Administration of Zagreb, the State Administration for Protection and Rescue, Education Institute for Emergency Medicine of the City of Zagreb, Public Fire Department of the City of Zagreb, City Fire Department of the City of Zagreb, Educational Institute for Public Health “Dr. Andija Štampar “, the Red Cross Society of the City of Zagreb, the Zagreb Radio Amateur Association, and the Search Dog Training Associations KOSSP and HUOPP.
