How Much is a Beer on Hvar: A Price Guide

A lot of people seem to be asking the same question – how much is a beer on Hvar?

ARTICLE UPDATE DECEMBER 2013 – And the winner is C’Est La Vie!

It is a question I feel qualified to answer…

I don’t spend a lot of time looking at the statistics and data on the website, but every month or so I have a look – check out what people are searching for. It amuses me each month to find so many people looking for sex on Hvar being directed here, and those looking for escort girls ending up here

But – perhaps given the hot weather – there is a new important topic being researched, namely the price of a beer on Hvar. Although I don’t know much about prostitutes or escort girls, when it comes to the humble pint, I do have insider information…

So how much is a beer on Hvar? The answer of course depends on where you drink it.

Beers come in bottle sizes of 0.25, 0.33 and 0.5 litres. I try not to deal with the first two unless absolutely necessary. Draught beer comes in 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 litre glasses.

Prices vary from the villages to Hvar Town, but the average price for a half-litre is about 15 kuna (2 euro), with this increasing to 20-25 kuna in Hvar Town, and a little more in the fancy places such as Carpe Diem and Hula Hula, where the 0.33 litre bottle (or smaller) is preferred. The cheapest pint I have found in a bar after some dedicated research is 10 kuna a half-litre, but I am not sure the operation is entirely legal, so forgive me for not disclosing its whereabouts.

Supermarket prices are obviously cheaper. A case of 20 bottles will set you back about 115 kuna (although you have to pay for the case and bottles, redeemable on production of receipt and empty bottles), beer in cans is a lot more expensive (7-10 kuna), plastic bottled beer quite a lot cheaper. The choice is yours.

One nice thing I have heard about some bars (I have obviously never drunk enough to verify this) is that after three beers, you get the fourth one free.

The official advice in this heat of course is to avoid all beer and drink just water, but that really isn’t fun…
